St. Mary's College of Maryland Baseball Drops Two Games to York College (PA)

St. Mary's City, MD-- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Baseball Team (0-5) hosted the York College of Pennsylvania Spartans  (2-5) for a weekend non-conference double header. The Seahawks dropped game one 15-3 and game two and the second game 12-10.

How It Happened (Game 1)

  • York College got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning. 

  • The Seahawks knotted the game at one after a Layne Lesko sacrifice ground out scored Adrian Auber from third in the bottom of the second. Rhett Fletcher was left stranded on second base in the inning. 

  • The Spartans went on to take a one point lead back in the next half inning. The Seahawks threatened to tie or retake the lead on several occasions over the course of the third and fourth innings, but left two runners stranded both times. 

  • York went on to break the game open in the top of the fifth, scoring nine runs to take a commanding 11-1 lead. 

  • Ian Walters stopped the bleeding the next half inning for the Seahawks by connecting on an RBI double that sent Trevor Smith home from second and George Berbakos home from third. Smith singled earlier in the inning, while Berbakos was hit by a pitch. 

  • York iced the game with a three run top of the sixth. The Spartans went on to score one more run in the top of the seventh to win 15-3.

How It Happened (Game 2)

  • The Spartans jumped out to an early 4-0 lead following the top of the first inning. 

  • Trevor Smith got the Seahawks on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. Aaron Wathen scored from second after reaching earlier in the inning off of a throwing error. 

  • The Seahawks went on to level the score at four each after a big top of the third inning. Aaron Wathen and George Berbakos both singled, while Cole Tarleton walked to load the bases with no outs. Trevor Smith scored one runner with an RBI single, while Ian Walters recorded an RBI off of a sacrifice fly ball. Rhett Fletcher helped score the third run of the inning to tie the game at four after another RBI single from the Seahawks. That would end the scoring for St. Mary's in the inning, as they left two runners aboard. 

  • St. Mary's kept the momentum going with a two run top of the fourth. Cole Tarleton sent two runners home on an RBI double. Aaron Wathen and George Berbakos both singled earlier in the inning and scored from first and second. 

  • York added one run in the top of the sixth to make it a one run game. 

  • The Spartans added another four runs in the top of the seventh inning to make it a 9-6 game. 

  • With their backs against the wall, St. Mary's scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game after Layne Lesko scored on a wild pitch and George Berbakos knocked in an RBi triple.

  • York went on to score three runs in the top of the ninth to take a 12-9 lead. 

  • Cole Tarleton connected on an RBI single to send home George Barbados from third base to make it a two tun game. Unfortunately for the Seahawks, the really would end there and York took home a 12-10 victory. 

Inside the Box Score (Game 2)

  • George Berbakos paced the Seahawks with four hits. 

  • Cole Tarleton had a team high three RBI's. 

  • Ryan Matthews was given the loss for the Seahawks after pitching two innings and giving up two earned runs. Jack Overton pitched five and two thirds innings and faced 25 batters as well.
