SALISBURY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team came up short against their second straight nationally-ranked opponent Tuesday night (April 15) despite a career-high 20 saves from sophomore
Ty Grove (Finksburg, Md./Saint John's Catholic). St. Mary's College (7-6) fell 15-7 to No. 2 Salisbury University (15-0).
How It Happened
- Salisbury jumped out to a 2-0 lead before sophomore Declan Horton (University Park, Md./DeMatha) put the Seahawks on the scoreboard, finishing off a pass from senior captain Nate Hochrein (Baltimore, Md./Towson) with 8:20 left in the first period. The Sea Gulls ended first-quarter play with five straight to stake a 7-1 advantage.
- SMCM won the second frame, 2-1, behind a pair of unassisted goals from Hochrein and junior midfielder Nick Machiran (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) and headed into the halftime break down 8-3.
- The third stanza went to SU by a 4-2 margin as Salisbury scored the first two of the quarter before senior attackman Aiden Doyle (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and Horton notched the next two. The Sea Gulls closed out the third with two more for a 12-5 lead.
- The two sides alternated the last five goals of the game with SU taking a 3-2 edge.

- St. Mary's College edged Salisbury, 13-12, in face-offs as junior Matteo Ciccarello (Crofton, Md./Arundel) went 12-of-23 at X.
- The Sea Gulls posted a 46-39 shot advantage while owning a +8-turnover margin (12-20) as SU caused 15 of the Seahawks' 20 miscues.
- SU also tallied a 53-44 ground ball margin despite a combined 13 ground balls from Ciccarello (7) and junior defenseman Joe Szymanski (Easton, Md./Easton).
