St. Mary's College Baseball Advances to United East Conference Final Four

St. Mary's City, MD-- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Baseball Team (13-14) hosted the Penn State Abington Lions  (17-20) for the United East Conference Tournament Second Round. The Seahawks were victorious in game one, defeating the Lions 8-2, and completed the sweep with a 10-7 win in game two. . 

How It Happened (Game 1)

  • Penn State Abington jumped out in front 2-0 to start the game in the top of the first inning. The Seahawks responded in the bottom of the second with a Rhett Fletcher single that scored Ian Walters from second base. 

  • Both the Seahawks and Lions went scoreless for several innings until the Seahawks scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. Cole Tarleton scored an unearned run before Trevor Smith knocked an RBI single to score George Berbakos all the way from first. 

  • Ian Walters broke the game open in the bottom of the seventh with a two run homer to make it a 5-2 ball game. 

  • St. Mary's went on to add three more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Rhett Fletcher scored an unearned run. Aaron Wathen and George Berbakos both hit on RBI singles to score two more runs. The Seahawks went on to win 8-2. 

Inside the Box Score (Game 1)

  • Ian Walters contributed two hits and two RBI's. 

  • Aaron Wathen and George Berbakos both chipped in two hits and an RBI. 

  • Ryder Chalk pitched a complete game, giving up two earned runs and striking out 6. 

How It Happened (Game 2)

  • The Seahawks scored eight unanswered runs over the first four innings of the game. 

  • Eli Shafer scored on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the first inning. Corey Brown and Eli Shafer both hit RBI singles in the bottom of the second. Corey Smith kept his day going with an RBI double in the bottom of the third to score two more St. Mary's base runners. Rhet Fletcher and George Berbakos both connected on RBI singles in the bottom of the fourth, while Cole Tarleton scored on an Ian Walters ground out to make it 8-0. 

  • Penn State Abington got on the board with three runs in the top of the fifth, The Seahawks were able to respond with an Aaron Wathen RBI double and a George Berbakos RBI single  in the bottom of the fifth to take a 10-3 lead in the ball game, 

  • The Lions were able to score two runs in the sixth and eighth innings to cut the Seahawk lead to three. The Seahawks were able to slam the door shut in the top of the ninth to win 10-7 and take the series. 

Inside the Box Score (Game 2)

  • Eli Shafer, Aaron Wathen, George Berbakos, Trevor Smith, Rhett Fletcher, and Corey Brown all had two hits. 

  • George Berbakos and Corey Brown both had three RBI's. 

  • Jordan Bonhoff pitched five and a quarter innings and gave up three earned runs. Bonhoff struck out nine batters. Nick Russo pitched two innings and gave up two earned runs.
