SMCM Men’s Lacrosse Captures Fourth Straight United East Tournament Championship

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – St. Mary's College of Maryland, your 2025 United East Conference Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament Champions! No. 1 seed St. Mary's College (9-7) registered its fourth consecutive tournament title with a 21-8 victory over No. 2 seed Penn College (14-5) Saturday afternoon (May 3).
 
The win gives the Seahawks the league's automatic qualifying spot in the 2025 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament. The DIII men's lacrosse tournament selection show can be streamed at 9 pm ET tomorrow, Sunday, May 4 on NCAA.com.
 
Sophomore Declan Horton (University Park, Md./DeMatha Catholic) was named the Tournament MVP after putting up a career-best six goals and scooping up a season-high three ground balls in today's championship victory.
 
How It Happened
  • Penn College claimed a 2-0 lead within the first two minutes of the game with Elliot Dotson and Owen Kupsey scoring within a 46-second span.
  • SMCM overcame its slow start with 13 goals in a row to stake a 13-2 advantage with 7:42 remaining in the third period. Kupsey ended the Wildcats' scoring drought with his 54th goal of the season with 6:26 left in the third.
  • Sophomore Gavin McKay (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) scored back-to-back goals to spark a 5-1 run for St. Mary's College, giving the hosts an 18-4 lead with 10:49 to go in the game.
  • Penn College strung together a four-goal run to pull within 18-8 with 5:01 remaining in regulation.

  • The Seahawks posted a 53-37 shot advantage while earning a 48-27 margin in ground balls.
  • SMCM controlled the middle of the field, winning 23-of-33 face-offs.

  • Senior midfielder Jake Levey (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) contributed a career-best three helpers plus one goal.
  • Junior defenseman Joe Szymanski (Easton, Md./Easton) collected nine ground balls while junior Matteo Ciccarello (Crofton, Md./Arundel) won 15-of-19 face-offs and picked up six loose balls.
  • Senior Cullen McKay (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) made seven saves.

  • Kupsey paced the Wildcats with two goals while Dotson notched a team-best three points on a goal and two assists.
  • Ryan Twist finished with 10 saves for Penn College.
