St. Mary’s College Men’s Lacrosse Doubles Up Pfeiffer, Advances to NCAA Second Round

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Win and advance! That's exactly what the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team did Wednesday afternoon (May 7) as St. Mary's College began action in the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament. The Seahawks (10-7) scored eight straight to end the game and post an 18-9 victory over Pfeiffer University (15-4) in first-round action.
 
SMCM will continue its NCAA Tournament journey Saturday, May 10, when they face host No. 2 Salisbury University in the NCAA Second Round at Sea Gull Stadium at 3:30 pm. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $7 for seniors (65+), $3 for children and non-Salisbury University students and you can purchase tickets online.
 
Saturday's matchup with Salisbury will be the second of the season between the two teams as the Sea Gulls earned a 15-7 victory on April 15 on their home turf.


 
How It Happened
  • The two sides opened the game by trading a pair of two-goal runs. Pfeiffer claimed an early 2-0 lead in the first 95 seconds of the game behind goals from Andrew Brown and Zach Gignac. St. Mary's College then notched two goals five minutes apart to even the game at two-all as senior attackman Aiden Doyle (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) tallied a goal and an assist.
  • Brown scored his second of the game with 7:01 left in the first period before Ethan Miles netted a man-down goal 51 seconds into the second quarter for a 4-2 Falcon lead. Junior attackman Joshua Martel (Linthicum, Md./North County) and senior midfielder Jake Levey (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) knotted the game once again with 7:12 remaining in the first half. Miles handed Pfeiffer its final lead of the game at 5-4 with 6:10 left in the second stanza.
  • Levey and Horton scored 50 seconds apart to give the Seahawks their first lead of the game, 6-5, with 4:21 to go in the half. The home team carried the one-goal lead into halftime.
  • The two teams alternated the first five goals of the game as SMCM staked a 9-7 advantage with 6:22 remaining in the third period. Nine seconds later, sophomore defensive midfielder Will Hock (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) scored a fastbreak goal off the face-off for a three-goal home team lead.
  • Pfeiffer made one last push as Mason Tardiff and Khyler Johnson each found the back of the net to pull the Falcons to within one with 4:33 to go in the third.
  • St. Mary's College rattled off eight in a row over the final 19 minutes of the game to lock up the program's third win in NCAA Tournament action.

  • The Seahawks outshot Pfeiffer by a 62-32 margin while garnering a 44-25 advantage in ground balls.
  • SMCM won 18-of-29 face-offs while killing all five of the Falcons' extra-man opportunities.

  • Doyle finished the game with a game-best six points on game-highs of four goals and two assists.
  • Levey contributed three goals and one helper while senior attackman Keegan Preis (Upper Falls, Md./Loyola Blakefield) chipped in two goals and two dimes.
  • Sophomore Gavin McKay (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) matched his career-best of three goals for the second straight game.
  • Junior defenseman Joe Szymanski (Easton, Md./Easton), the United East Conference Defensive Player of the Year, scooped up seven ground balls and caused three turnovers while senior defenseman Joe Murray (Lutherville, Md./Towson) notched career-bests of five ground balls and five caused turnovers.
  • Junior Matteo Ciccarello (Crofton, Md./Arundel) won 14-of-23 face-offs while first-year Drake Erisman (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) went 4-for-6.
  • Senior Cullen McKay (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) made 10 saves to improve to 8-3 in the season while collecting his 200th career save with his third denial of the game.
 
Pfeiffer Game Notes
  • Miles, the USA South Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year, paced the Falcons in the loss with three goals while Brown and Tardiff both finished with two.
  • Korbin Hamilton finished with 14 saves as Pfeiffer had its 10-game win streak halted.
