LATHAM, N.Y. – St. Mary's College of Maryland three-peated as the United East Conference Presidents' Cup as released by the league office Thursday morning (June 19). This is the third straight Presidents' Cup for St. Mary's College as the Seahawks wrapped up their fourth year in the United East.
"Winning the Presidents' Cup for a third straight year is an incredible honor and testament to the relentless dedication, teamwork, and excellence of our student-athletes, coaches, and support staff," fifth-year Director of Athletics & Recreation
Crystal Gibson said. "This achievement reflects not only our athletic success, but the strength of our Seahawk family and entire campus community."
In addition to capturing the Presidents' Cup, the Seahawks also claimed the honor for Top Overall Athletic Program – Women's Team for a second consecutive year.
"I am immensely proud of our SMCM women's sports team for capturing the title of top overall women's athletic program for a second year in a row. This award is the culmination of their unyielding drive, discipline, and heart showcased every single day to achieve their full potential and strive for excellence at every level,"
Nairem Moran, fourth-year director of athletic communications and senior woman administrator, expressed.
The Presidents' Cup annually recognizes the athletic achievements of its members. The Presidents' Cup is determined by a scoring system which rewards a school for success during both regular season and postseason competition. St. Mary's College finished as the runner-up for the Presidents' Cup in its inaugural year in the league (2021-22).
It was another tight race between St. Mary's College and Penn State Harrisburg for the Presidents' Cup with the Seahawks coming out on top by a 1.70 margin for their third straight Cup victory. SMCM ran away as the top overall women's athletic program, posting a 2.79 margin of victory over Harrisburg.
Throughout the year, St. Mary's College never eased its grip of the No. 1 spot in the Presidents' Cup standings. The Seahawks owned a 3.28 margin over second-place Cairn University following the conclusion of the fall sports championship season. After the winter sports championship campaign, SMCM boasted a 3.00 margin over second-place Penn College.
Penn State Harrisburg earned the award for the Top Overall Men's Athletic Program, edging St. Mary's College by just 0.13 points.
The Seahawks collected United East tournament championship trophies in eight different sports – women's cross country, field hockey, men's soccer, men's indoor track & field, women's indoor track & field, men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, and women's outdoor track & field – on its way to a third Presidents' Cup. SMCM also notched six regular-season championship crowns in field hockey, men's soccer, women's basketball, men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, and women's tennis.
Additionally, the men's cross country, women's soccer, women's basketball, men's tennis, women's tennis, and men's outdoor track & field teams finished as the United East runner-up in their respective tournament championships while baseball advanced to their tournament's Final Four.
The conference sponsors 20 championships with St. Mary's College having the potential to compete in 17 as the Seahawks do not sponsor men's golf, softball, or men's volleyball. For the second straight year, every Seahawk team eligible for United East action advanced to the postseason.
