ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – St. Mary's College of Maryland Director of Athletics and Recreation Crystal Gibson announced Wednesday (June 25) that Brittney Morris will be stepping down from her position as the head women's lacrosse coach at St. Mary's College after four seasons at the helm.

Morris and her husband, Kyle, who served as the club sports coordinator and assistant coach at SMCM, are heading to the Midwest to pursue the same role at NCAA Division I Xavier University, a member of the Big East Conference, in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Hired as the program's 14th head coach in December 2021, the Woodstock, Ga., native mentored eight Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Metro Region selections, three United East Conference Offensive Players of the Year, three United East Defensive Players of the Year, and two conference Rookies of the Year as well as landed 30 Seahawks on the All-United East teams.

Morris guided St. Mary's College to four consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament, advancing to the Second Round in 2022 and 2024. Additionally, the Seahawks captured four straight United East regular-season championship titles and four league tournament crowns.

She was named the 2023 United East Coach of the Year and notched a four-year record of 46-29, including going 19-0 in conference action, during her tenure at SMCM.

"I'm incredibly grateful for the past four seasons at St. Mary's College and all the memories it has given me. I want to sincerely thank Athletics Director Crystal Gibson and the entire athletic department for their support and belief in me throughout my time here," Morris said.

St. Mary's College demonstrated excellence in the classroom as well during Morris' tenure, collecting four IWLCA Academic Honor Squad distinctions while having 27 Seahawks earn IWLCA Academic Honor Roll status.

The Seahawks also received three United East Team Academic Awards, claimed 40 spots on the United East Winter/Spring All-Academic Teams, had two earn United East Senior Scholar-Athlete laurels, two collect United East Elite 20 Awards, and six named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Women's At-Large Team.

Morris added, "Most of all, I want to thank the student-athlete, both past and present, who have made this journey so meaningful. I've been fortunate to coach an amazing group of young women, and I'm proud of the growth we've shared together. The future of Seahawk lacrosse is bright, and I know the program is going to continue to find immense success."

A national search for the next Seahawk head women's lacrosse coach will begin at once.
