Blaum Scores Both as St. Mary’s College Men’s Soccer Beats Ursinus

SALISBURY, Md. – Sophomore midfielder Zach Blaum (Richmond, Va./Atlee) opened his second year as a Seahawk with his second career brace Friday evening (Aug. 29) to lift the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team to a season-opening victory. St. Mary's College (1-0) rebounded from a 1-0 deficit to take a 2-1 non-conference win over Ursinus College (0-1) at Salisbury University's Elmer Lord Tournament.

How It Happened
  • Ursinus landed on the scoreboard first when Matthew McFadden found the back of the net at 28:10 off a double assist from Matthew Lohr and Jahsen Cole as Cole slotted a short pass to Lohr. Lohr then chipped the ball over the defense to McFadden for the finish.
  • Blaum pulled the Seahawks into a 1-1 draw 10 minutes later as he put back the rebound of first-year midfielder Marco Mazzola (Pasadena, Md./Spalding) shot into the lower right corner.
  • The two sides headed into halftime locked in at one-all.
  • The Bears had an opportunity to go up 2-1 in the 69th minute when McFadden tried to get another past junior goalkeeper Zack Reed (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) but Reed knocked it out of play.
  • Blaum netted the eventual game-winning goal at 78:37 when he corralled a long volley from junior forward Nick Haney (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Northern) and slipped it past Josiah Moore.
