Allen Leads SMCM Field Hockey to Season-Opening Win

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Senior forward Briana Allen (Bowie, Md./Mount de Sales) had a hand in three goals Saturday morning (Aug. 30) to lift the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team to a season-opening victory. St. Mary's College (1-0) notched a 4-1 non-conference triumph over Sewanee: The University of the South (0-1), giving first-year interim head coach Allyson Osborne her first career coaching victory.
 
Additionally, senior forward Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) broke the career assists record with one helper this afternoon, giving her 24 thus far and surpassing Lauriann Parker '13, who finished her career with 23. Parker will be inducted into the St. Mary's College Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 17.
 
How It Happened
  • Ziegler put the Seahawks on the scoreboard first as she slipped behind the Sewanee goalie and deflected Allen's pass at 5:27.
  • Allen doubled SMCM's advantage at 21:47 when first-year midfielder Julie Presgraves (Frederick, Md./Frederick) intercepted a Tiger defensive clear and sent in a through pass which Allen pushed in for a 2-0 lead.
  • St. Mary's College's 2-0 lead stood until 33:16 when Allen tallied her second of the day, deflecting in Ziegler's pass for her record-breaking assist.
  • Senior midfielder Josie Shermeyer (Harrisburg, Pa./East Pennsboro Area) added her name to the scoring list as Shermeyer dribbled past two Sewanee players before reverse sweeping the ball for a 4-0 Seahawk margin at 44:19.
  • The Tigers avoided a shutout loss with 35 seconds remaining in the game as Catherine Crane converted Shepard Ramsey's cross.

  • SMCM controlled possession from start to finish, posting a 26-3 shot advantage which included a 16-2 shot on goal margin.
  • St. Mary's College earned eight penalty corners to Sewanee's three.

  • Allen had herself a career day with career-bests of two goals and five points while Ziegler finished with a goal and an assist.
  • Sophomore Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) made just one save in improving to 2-0 on the young season.
