ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Seniors
Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) and
Sofia Lopez (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) both found the back of the cage in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team to their second straight win. St. Mary's College (2-0) blanked Virginia Wesleyan University (0-3), 2-0, in non-conference action for its first shutout of the season.
How It Happened
- Following a scoreless first quarter, senior forward Briana Allen (Bowie, Md./Mount de Sales) poked the ball behind the defense where Ziegler was waiting at the goal line for the deflection at 17:13.
- The Seahawks secured a two-goal advantage seven minutes later when senior midfielder Josie Shermeyer (Harrisburg, Pa./East Pennsboro Area) rocketed a shot from the left side of the circle, which was deflected towards the far post for Lopez to tap in.
- SMCM stood strong against a Virginia Wesleyan flurry in the third quarter, fending off five consecutive penalty corners over the final two minutes of the frame.
