SALISBURY, Md. – Sophomore goalkeeper
Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) made a career-best 23 saves Saturday afternoon (Sept. 13) in the first loss of the season for the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team. St. Mary's College (4-1) dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 2 Salisbury University (4-1).
How It Happened
- Salisbury outshot the Seahawks 14-0 in the first quarter but eight saves by Kent and a defensive save by junior defender Safi Stimely (Linthicum, Md./Broadneck) kept the 15 minutes of the game scoreless.
- Tessa Gray put the Sea Gulls on the scoreboard at 21:18 and the 1-0 SU lead would carry through halftime as Kent tacked on seven more stops.
- The hosts doubled their lead at 37:39 when Kaitlyn DeModna finished off a pass from Alex Kupper. DeModna struck again four minutes later, converting a penalty stroke for a 3-0 SU advantage through three quarters of action.
- Senior midfielder Josie Shermeyer (Harrisburg, Pa./East Pennsboro Area) fired off SMCM's lone shot of the game in the third period as St. Mary's College generated a shot off its lone penalty corner.
- The Seahawks held Salisbury scoreless in the fourth frame behind five Kent stops and a defensive save by senior captain Jena Vanskiver (Fallston, Md./Fallston).
