Women’s Soccer Defends Home Turf with 2-1 Victory over Catholic

St. Mary's City, Md. – September 17, 2025 – Behind a pair of first-half goals and a standout performance in net, the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team (3-3-2) secured a 2-1 win over Catholic University (2-4-1) Wednesday evening at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium.

The Seahawks struck twice in quick succession midway through the first half. In the 32nd minute, Megan Rusk opened the scoring off an assist from Keira O'Neail, giving St. Mary's the early advantage. Less than two minutes later, Ella Raines doubled the lead, finishing a setup from Maddison Spradlin to make it 2-0.

Catholic applied relentless pressure throughout the match, outshooting the Seahawks 28-3 and generating 10 corner kicks. The Cardinals pulled one back in the 62nd minute when Caroline Aponte converted off an assist from Peyton Coron.

Despite the offensive onslaught, goalkeeper Kyleigh Bland delivered a heroic performance, recording a career-high 15 saves to preserve the victory.

With the win, St. Mary's improved to 2-0-1 at home this season in front of a crowd of 222.

The Seahawks will look to keep their momentum going when they host Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, September 20, at 3:00 p.m. at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium.
