WASHINGTON, D.C. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2025 campaign Tuesday night (Sept. 2). St. Mary's College (2-1) dropped a 4-1 decision to The Catholic University of America (2-0) in non-conference play.
How It Happened
- Catholic landed on the scoreboard early as Holden Woodings found the back of the net at 4:14.
- The host Cardinals doubled their advantage at 26:06 as Ben Zimmer finished off a feed from Christian Backich.
- Sophomore midfielder Zach Blaum (Richmond, Va./Atlee) notched the Seahawks' first shot of the game at 40:03 which was blocked by the CUA defense. Sophomore forward William Marbray (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) fired off a shot at 41:25 but the attempt went missed left and Catholic headed into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
- The Cardinals jumped to a 3-0 advantage at the start of the second half when Carson Shamoo found the low left side of the goal at 46:12.
- Sophomore forward Nick Haney (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Northern) put SMCM on the scoreboard in the 63rd minute as Haney's corner kick from the right side of the goal bent in for a 3-1 game.
- St. Mary's College played a man down for the final 14 minutes after senior defender Xavier Lewis (Severn, Md./Old Mill) received a red card.
- Junior midfielder Bryce Webster (Saint Leonard, Md./Calvert) sent in a shot for the Seahawks at 79:26 but missed right.
- Junior goalkeeper Zack Reed (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) made back-to-back saves in 13 seconds before Backich tallied a goal of his own at 84:25.
