SMCM Field Hockey Stumbles against No. 14 York (Pa.)

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team suffered their second loss of the season Saturday afternoon (Sept. 20). St. Mary's College (5-2) dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 14 York College of Pennsylvania (5-2) in non-conference action.

How It Happened
  • York outshot the Seahawks, 7-0, in the first period but sophomore goalkeeper Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) continued her strong presence in cage, turning away all six of the on-target attempts.
  • It was much of the same in the second quarter as the Spartan defense once again held SMCM shotless. On the other side of the field, YCP put up nine more shots with two slipping past Kent. Kelbie Linebaugh scored both goals, just under three minutes apart, to send York into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
  • The first shot off a St. Mary's College stick came early in the third stanza when senior forward Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) sent in an attempt at 36:07. York finished the third frame with a 9-1 shot margin.
  • Shots were equal in the fourth period at two apiece with the Spartans capitalizing on one of those shots to post a 3-0 advantage at 46:10.

Inside the Box Score
  • YCP finished the game with a 27-3 shot advantage, including a 17-1 shots on goal margin.
  • York also notched a 12-3 margin in penalty corners.

St. Mary's College
  • Kent registered her second double-digit save performance of her career with 14 stops.
  • Senior captains Jena Vanskiver (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Emma Watkins (Frederick, Md./Linganore), along with Ziegler, each fired off a shot for the Seahawks. Vanskiver and Watkins' shots were blocked while Ziegler's was saved.
  • York is the second nationally ranked opponent that SMCM has faced this season.

York
  • Linebaugh finished with two goals on three shots.
  • Abby Smith needed just one save to record her first shutout of the season.
