St. Mary’s College Field Hockey Stifled by Stevenson

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team picked up their second straight loss Wednesday night (Sept. 24). St. Mary's College (5-3) fell 2-0 to Stevenson University (7-1) in non-conference action.

How It Happened
  • St. Mary's College claimed the only shot of the first quarter off the stick of senior captain Emma Watkins (Frederick, Md./Linganore) at 3:34, which was blocked by the Mustang defense.
  • Stevenson edged the Seahawks, 2-1, in second quarter shots with sophomore goalkeeper Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) stopping Lauren Tobin's attempt at 17:33. SU blocked senior captain Jena Vanskiver's (Fallston, Md./Fallston) shot at 27:34 and the two sides headed into halftime in a scoreless draw.
  • SMCM generated two shots off a penalty corner at 34:00 but both shots were turned away by the Mustang defense. Stevenson finally broke through with five seconds remaining in the third period as Sydney Aylward fed Monica Druckemiller to her left and Druckemiller rocketed a shot into the lower right corner for a 1-0 SU lead.
  • The Mustangs outshot the hosts, 4-1 in the fourth stanza and added an insurance goal with less than two minutes left in the game.
