RALEIGH, N.C. – Senior forward
Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) scored three times on her way to becoming the all-time goals leader for the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey program. St. Mary's College wrapped up its North Carolina trip Sunday (Sept. 28) with its fourth shutout of the season as the Seahawks (6-4) notched an 8-0 non-conference win over Wittenberg University (0-8), snapping their three-game skid.
Ziegler claimed the all-time goals leader title with her second goal of the game. Her three-goal performance today brings her career total to 46, surpassing the mark of 44 set by
Lauriann Parker '13.
How It Happened
- Senior midfielder Josie Shermeyer (Harrisburg, Pa./East Pennsboro) had a hand in all three goals scored in the first quarter. Shermeyer tallied the first goal of the contest before assisting on the next two goals by senior captain Emma Watkins (Frederick, Md./Linganore) and Ziegler.
- Watkins and Ziegler struck again in the second period to give SMCM a 5-0 halftime lead.
- Ziegler picked up the lone goal of the third frame at 32:04 to make it a 6-0 game.
- Senior captain Jena Vanskiver (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and first-year defender Josie Mascolo (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) each scored their first goal of the season in the fourth stanza to round out the scoring.

- St. Mary's College finished the game with a 42-12 shot advantage, including a 25-5 shots on goal margin.
- The Seahawks doubled up Wittenberg in penalty corners, 8-4.
St. Mary's College
- Sophomore Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) and junior Caroline McDonald (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) split equal time in goal with Kent making the start. Kent made three saves while McDonald had one in their second combined shutout of the season.
Wittenberg
- Taryn Toburen came up with 14 saves as the Tigers remain winless on the season.
