Lexington, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's volleyball team picked up a key early-season road win Friday evening, defeating Southern Virginia University 3–1 (25–21, 21–25, 25–23, 25–21) at the Duchossois Athletic & Recreation Center.
The Seahawks opened the match with a 25–21 win in the first set before the Knights evened the score by taking the second. St. Mary's regrouped, edging Southern Virginia 25–23 in a pivotal third set and closing out the match with a 25–21 victory in the fourth.
Sophmore outside hitter Maya Mauro powered the attack with 15 kills and 12 digs, while Freshman Erianna Mendieta added 11 kills, 15 digs, and a pair of service aces. Hope Parrish chipped in five kills and three blocks, and sophomore Faith Shockley tallied three kills with solid front-row defense.
The setting duo of Camilla Galeano (13 assists, six digs) and Arielle Lubeck (11 assists, 12 digs) guided a balanced offense, while Stella Marrero anchored the defense with nine digs. As a team, the Seahawks finished with 42 kills, nine service aces, and six blocks while holding the Knights to a .066 hitting percentage.
With the victory, St. Mary's improves to 2–1 on the season. The Seahawks will return tomorrow, September 6th with matches against Washington & Lee as well as Mary Washington.
