ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team returned to the win column Saturday afternoon (Oct. 3). St. Mary's College (4-7, 1-2 UEC) posted a 3-1 United East Conference triumph over Keystone College (4-6-1, 2-1-0 UEC) behind a goal and an assist each from forwards
Nick Haney (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Northern) and
Matthew Kuwik (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery).
How It Happened
- The Seahawks claimed an early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. Haney fired in a shot from the left side of the field which was turned away by James Kallens. However, Kallens could not hold onto the save and Kuwik put back the rebound for his second goal of the season.
- Keystone tested senior captain Zack Reed (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) twice – once in the eighth minute and again in the 40th minute – but Reed was up to the challenge and SMCM headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
- The Giants evened the match at 1-1 in the 67th minute when Marcos Louzada bent a free kick just inside the far post from the left side.
- St. Mary's College regained its one-goal advantage late in the game as junior midfielder Zach Blaum (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) headed in Kuwik's cross in the 83rd minute.
- Haney added an insurance marker in the 88th minute as he dribbled past one Keystone defender and then split two other defenders with his shot into the lower left corner.
