GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team was dominant in their United East Conference opener Saturday afternoon (Oct. 3). St. Mary's College (4-5, 1-0 UEC) exploded for a 9-1 road victory over the league's newest member, Gwynedd Mercy University (0-10, 0-1 UEC).
How It Happened
- Following a scoreless first quarter, the Seahawks would put up a three-spot in the second to head into halftime with a 3-0 advantage. SMCM scored the first two in a five-minute span. Sophomore forwards Morgan Knott (Denton, Md./North Caroline) and Josie Mascolo (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) and senior defender Abi Wise (Crisfield, Md./Crisfield).
- Gwynedd Mercy got one back less than six minutes into the third period as Molly Botthof broke through for the Griffins.
- St. Mary's College quickly responded and grew its lead to 5-1 with goals from senior forward Emma Mastrangelo (Riverton, N.J./Cinnaminson) and Mascolo.
- The Seahawks rolled in the final frame with four unanswered goals coming off the sticks of junior forward Olivia Schwendeman (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) and defenders Bella Marson (Cockeysville, Md./Maryvale) and Safi Stimely (Linthicum, Md./Broadneck).

- SMCM held the Griffins to just two shots (both on goal) while firing off 25 with 16 being on target.
- St. Mary's College also recorded 20 penalty corners to GMU's four.
St. Mary's College
- Mascolo and Schwendeman both scored twice to lead the Seahawks. This was Schwendeman's second career multi-goal game while Mascolo registered her first two-goal effort.
- Wise and Marson both picked up their first points as Seahawks with their first collegiate goals.
- Knott and Stimely both tallied their first goal of the season.
- Junior Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) made just one save in 45 minutes of action while senior captain Caroline McDonald (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) played the entirety of the third quarter.

- Kelly Weaver collected seven stops as the Griffins are left searching for their first win of the year.
