ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Junior
Gavin McKay (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) scored a career-best four goals to lead the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team to a season-opening win Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 10). St. Mary's College (1-0) picked up a 12-7 non-conference victory over host Elizabethtown College (0-2).
How It Happened
- McKay and senior captain Joshua Martel (Linthicum, Md./North County) fueled the Seahawks' 3-0 start to the game as McKay notched a goal and an assist while Martel found the back of the net twice. Etown got on the scoreboard in the final 10 seconds of the first quarter.
- The Blue Jays tallied the first goal of the second period to pull within one before junior Declan Horton (University Park, Md./DeMatha) and McKay returned a three-goal cushion with 8:11 left in the half. Elizabethtown responded with two of its own to close the gap to one once again at 4:51. Horton sent SMCM into halftime with a 6-4 advantage with his second unassisted goal.
- St. Mary's College broke the game open with a five-goal third frame as sophomore attackman Owen Wynot (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) fueled a 4-0 run with two goals, helping the visitors stake an 11-6 lead into the fourth quarter.
Inside the Box Score
- Senior Matteo Ciccarello (Crofton, Md./Arundel) won 12-of-21 face-offs and scooped up four ground balls.
- The Seahawks' man-down defense was on point, killing all five of Etown's five extra-man opportunities.
- SMCM edged the Blue Jays 34-31 in ground balls while outshooting the hosts, 35-26.
St. Mary's College Game Notes
- McKay added an assist to finish with a career-high five points.
- Horton and Wynot each contributed two goals and an assist.
- Seniors Garrett Brodfuehrer (Lexington Park, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) and Joe Szymanski (Easton, Md./Easton) led the defensive effort as they each collected five ground balls and two caused turnovers. This was a career effort by Brodfuehrer.
- Sophomore goalie Ty Spencer (Hanover, Md./Indian Creek) made 11 saves for his first career win in his first career start.
Elizabethtown Game Notes
- Reese Levinson led the Blue Jays with two goals while Logan Rolles won 10 face-offs.
- Ben Zaitz turned away a dozen shots in goal for Etown.
