St. Mary's Falls to Hood in Season Opening Doubleheader

HAGERSTOWN, Md. — The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon to Hood College at Meritus Park. The Blazers took game one, 10-2, before claiming the nightcap, 15-8.

With the losses, the Seahawks open the season at 0-2, while Hood improves to 2-3.

Game One – Hood 10, St. Mary's 2

St. Mary's struck first with two unearned runs in the top of the first inning. Demetris Beverly reached base and later scored, while Rhett Fletcher delivered a sacrifice fly to give the Seahawks an early 2-0 advantage.

Hood responded with a run in the bottom half and broke the game open in the fifth inning. The Blazers used five walks, a balk, and a defensive miscue to plate five runs and seize control. Hood added four more in the sixth to pull away.

Fletcher finished 1-for-2 with a triple and an RBI, while Beverly swiped two bases and scored a run. Will Wilson and Kyle Catanzaro each added a hit for the Seahawks.

Jordan Bonhoff (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs over four innings of work. Hood managed just two hits in the game but capitalized on 10 walks and three Seahawk errors.

Game Two – Hood 15, St. Mary's 8

The Seahawks again jumped ahead early, scoring in the first inning on an RBI single from Fletcher.

After Hood answered with two runs in the bottom half, St. Mary's erupted for four runs in the third inning. An error plated one run before Andrew Harris drove in another on a groundout. Layne Lesko followed with a two-run single to give the Seahawks a 5-2 edge.

The Blazers responded immediately, scoring twice in the third before erupting for seven runs in the fourth inning to take control. Hood added single runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to extend its lead.

St. Mary's showed resilience with two unearned runs in the ninth inning to cap the scoring.

Fletcher led the offense, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a triple. Connor Wilkerson added two hits and scored twice, while Lesko drove in two runs. The Seahawks drew seven walks in the contest.

Ryan Matthews (0-1) suffered the loss in game two. Hood totaled 14 hits and nine walks in the nightcap.

St. Mary's will look to bounce back on Saturday, February 28th when they host Suny Cobleskill for a double header and their home opener.
