ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. — The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team split a high-scoring non-conference doubleheader with SUNY Cobleskill Saturday afternoon at the Hawk's Nest, dropping a 16-12 slugfest in the opener before rallying for a 7-5 victory in the nightcap.
St. Mary's moves to 1-3 on the season, while the Fighting Tigers leave the day 1-1.
Game One: SUNY Cobleskill 16, St. Mary's 12
The opener featured 28 combined runs and 29 hits in a back-and-forth affair.
St. Mary's struck first with a run in the bottom of the first and added two more in the second to build a 3-2 advantage. After Cobleskill erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning to take control, the Seahawks mounted a furious comeback attempt.
Trailing 14-5 entering the seventh, St. Mary's scored twice in the seventh before exploding for seven runs in the eighth to pull within two at 14-12. Connor Wilkerson powered the offense, going 4-for-6 with two doubles and three RBI, while Layne Lesko added two hits and three RBI.
Despite outhitting Cobleskill 15-14, the Seahawks could not complete the comeback as the Fighting Tigers plated two insurance runs in the ninth.
Cobleskill was led by Platt, who went 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBI, and Firment, who drove in four runs.
Game Two: St. Mary's 7, SUNY Cobleskill 5 (5 innings)
The Seahawks bounced back in the second game behind timely hitting and clutch relief pitching.
After falling behind 4-3 through three innings, St. Mary's erupted for four runs in the bottom of the fourth to seize control. Rhett Fletcher delivered a key three-RBI performance, while Demetris Beverly and Connor Wilkerson each recorded two hits. Wilkerson finished the twin bill with six hits and four RBI across both games.
The Seahawks collected 10 hits in the nightcap and capitalized on aggressive baserunning with four stolen bases.
On the mound, Colin Patterson earned the victory in relief, helping secure the shortened five-inning contest.
