ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team used timely hitting and strong pitching performances to sweep Notre Dame (Md.) in a United East Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at the Hawk's Nest. The Seahawks claimed a 6-1 victory in the opener before holding on for a 3-2 win in game two to improve to 3-3 on the season.
GAME ONE: St. Mary's 6, Notre Dame (Md.) 1
After surrendering a first-inning run, the Seahawks responded immediately and never looked back.
Notre Dame (Md.) (0-6) took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single in the top of the first, but St. Mary's answered with two runs in the bottom half. Connor Wilkerson advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt that allowed Demetris Beverly to score, and Kaden Hnath followed with an RBI single to give the Seahawks a 2-1 advantage.
The Seahawks broke the game open in the third inning. Hnath delivered again, lining a two-run single to score Rhett Fletcher and Wilkerson. Layne Lesko added a sacrifice fly later in the frame to extend the lead to 5-1.
An unearned run crossed in the fifth when Aaron Wathen scored on a balk, pushing the margin to 6-1.
Hnath paced the offense, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Wilkerson finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Wathen added a pair of hits, including a double. St. Mary's collected 11 hits in the opener.
Jordan Bonhoff (1-1) earned the win, tossing 5.1 innings and allowing just three hits and one run while striking out five. The bullpen quartet of Willie Nelson, Noah Gross, and Nick Russo combined to close out the final 1.2 innings without allowing a run.
GAME TWO: St. Mary's 3, Notre Dame (Md.) 2
Game two proved to be a tighter affair, with pitching taking center stage.
St. Mary's struck first in the second inning when Kyle Catanzaro singled home Layne Lesko. The Seahawks added two more in the third as Wilkerson delivered an RBI single and later scored on a caught-stealing play that allowed him to cross the plate, giving the home side a 3-0 cushion.
Notre Dame rallied in the fifth, trimming the deficit to one on a two-run triple, but the Seahawks' pitching staff slammed the door from there.
Ryan Matthews (1-1) earned the win, working five innings and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out four. Cam Gill secured his first save of the season, pitching the final two innings and striking out three while surrendering just one hit.
Rhett Fletcher led the offense in the nightcap with a 2-for-3 performance, while Wilkerson reached base twice and drove in a run. The Seahawks drew six walks and used aggressive baserunning to apply pressure throughout the game.
