Seahawks Split Doubleheader with York (Pa.)

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team split a nonconference doubleheader with York College of Pennsylvania Saturday afternoon at the Hawk's Nest. The Spartans took the opener 6-2, while the Seahawks responded with an 8-2 victory in the afternoon game.

With the split, St. Mary's moves to 4-4 on the season, while York leaves the double header 3-5 overall.

GAME 1: York (Pa.) 6, St. Mary's 2

York used a big opening inning to take control early in the first game of the doubleheader. The Spartans scored five runs in the top of the first highlighted by a two-run homer from Joe Urban and a string of RBI singles that gave York a quick 5-0 advantage.

The Seahawks chipped away in the fourth inning when Eli Shafer delivered an RBI single to score Rhett Fletcher. Later in the inning, Will Wilson followed with a run-scoring single to bring St. Mary's within three at 5-2.

York added an insurance run in the sixth inning on an RBI triple by Alex Neeld to cap the scoring.

Connor Wilkerson led the Seahawks offensively with a 2-for-3 performance, including a double. Shafer and Wilson each drove in a run.

On the mound, Jordan Bonhoff took the loss after allowing five runs over 3.2 innings while striking out seven. Nick Russo provided solid relief, tossing 3.1 innings and surrendering just one run.

GAME 2: St. Mary's 8, York (Pa.) 2

The Seahawks bounced back in the second game, using timely hitting and capitalizing on York miscues to secure the split.

After York took an early 1-0 lead in the first, St. Mary's evened the score in the second when Kyle Catanzaro reached on an error that allowed Eli Shafer to cross the plate.

The Seahawks took control in the fourth inning, scoring twice to grab a 3-1 lead. Kody Adkins later delivered an RBI single in the fifth to extend the advantage, and Shafer added another run-scoring hit in the sixth.

St. Mary's continued to apply pressure late, scoring once in the seventh and adding two more runs in the eighth to put the game away.

Kody Adkins paced the offense with a 3-for-4 performance and an RBI, while Kaden Hnath went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Eli Shafer also contributed two hits and an RBI.

On the mound, Ryan Matthews allowed one run over four innings in the start. Cam Gill earned the win with three innings of relief, and Adam Ferony and Willie Nelson combined to close out the final two frames.


St. Mary's will face the Spartans tomorrow, March 8th in a rubber match at York College.
