ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Seven third-quarter goals propelled the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team to their second straight win Friday night (Feb. 27). St. Mary's College (3-1) earned a 14-8 non-conference win over Hampden-Sydney College (2-2) as juniors
Gavin McKay (Urbana, Md./Urbana) and
Declan Horton (University Park, Md./DeMatha) and sophomore attackman
Owen Wynot (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) all registered hat tricks.
How It Happened
- Hampden-Sydney claimed the early lead behind three goals from Cole Palmer giving the Tigers a one-goal advantage with 1:13 remaining in the first quarter. McKay's second goal of the game with four seconds left sent the two teams into the second frame tied at 3-3.
- Two more goals were scored as Horton gave the Seahawks their first lead, 4-3, of the game at 12:09 before Kavin Wood knotted the score once again a minute later. The 4-4 draw held through halftime.
- SMCM netted three of the first five goals in the third period for a 7-6 margin at 11:18. St. Mary's College closed out the stanza on a 4-0 run, including a quick-stick goal by Wynot as time expired, for an 11-6 lead going into the fourth quarter.
- H-SC notched the first and last goals of the fourth frame, sandwiching three straight by the Seahawks for the 14-8 final.

- SMCM outshot the Tigers, 46-28, while forcing 11 of the visitors' 22 turnovers. St. Mary's College finished the game with 11 miscues.
