ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – It was a defensive battle between the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team and The Catholic University of America Wednesday night (Mar. 4). St. Mary's College (3-2) had its two-game win streak snapped with a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to Catholic (1-3).
How It Happened
- The first two goals of the game were scored in the final 15 seconds of the first quarter as junior attackman Gavin McKay (Urbana, Md./Urbana) gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead with 15 ticks on the clock. CUA knotted the game at 1-all behind Ryan Carickhoff's goal with two seconds remaining.
- The Cardinals did all the scoring in the second frame as Chris McCabe and Brady McMahon both found the back of the net to send Catholic into halftime with a 3-1 lead.
- The tables turned in the third period as all the scoring came off SMCM sticks. Sophomore attackman Owen Wynot (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) and junior Braeden Colegrove (Lutherville Timonium, Md./Dulaney) each notched a goal for a 3-3 draw heading into the final 15 minutes.
- CUA struck first at 12:41 to stake a 4-3 advantage following a score by Steve Dezelic. McKay then added his second of the night four minutes later for another tied score. Alejandro Masferrer notched the eventual game-winner with 2:03 remaining in the game.
- St. Mary's College won the ensuing faceoff but turned the ball over; however, a Catholic penalty at 1:21 returned the possession to the Seahawks. Wynot fired off a shot at 1:14 which Colton Manorek handled. Following a successful clear, the Cardinals ran out the clock to lock up the win.
