SMCM Men’s Lacrosse Back in Win Column Behind Five McKay Goals

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team returned to the win column in a big way Saturday afternoon (Mar. 7). Junior attackman Gavin McKay (Urbana, Md./Urbana) put up a career-high five goals in leading St. Mary's College (4-2) to a 20-5 non-conference win over SUNY Maritime College (2-2).
 
How It Happened
  • After the two sides traded the first two goals of the game, the Seahawks rattled off 12 straight goals to stake a 13-1 lead with 9:56 to go in the third quarter.
  • Maritime tallied two of the next three to trim the deficit to 14-3 heading into the fourth period.
  • SMCM outscored the Privateers, 6-2, in the final stanza, including the game on a 4-0 run behind two goals from junior midfielder Luke Maciarello (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) and two assists from first-year attackman Jaxson Zapoli (Prince Frederick, Md./Calvert).

  • St. Mary's College outshot Maritime, 63-24, while posting a +6-turnover margin (17-23).
  • The Seahawks raced out to a 47-18 margin in ground balls behind 13 ground balls from senior Matteo Ciccarello (Crofton, Md./Arundel), who won 24-of-26 faceoffs.

  • Senior captain Joshua Martel (Linthicum, Md./North County) chipped in two goals and two assists while junior defensive midfielder Will Hock (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) added a career-best three points on a career-high two goals and one helper plus five ground balls.
  • Maciarello finished the afternoon with two goals while senior attackman Liam McNulty (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) notched a goal and two dimes.
  • Senior captain Adam Martin (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) led the defense with three caused turnovers and three ground balls while senior defenseman Joe Szymanski (Easton, Md./Easton) scooped seven loose balls.
  • Sophomore goalie Ty Spencer (Hanover, Md./Indian Creek) made six saves and had one ground balls.

  • Thomas McCarvil scored twice for the Privateers while Cristian Scaffaro turned away 13 shots.
