ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team returned to the win column Saturday afternoon (Mar. 21) with a non-conference road win. St. Mary's College (6-4) posted a 13-8 victory over Eastern University (1-8) as junior attackmen
Declan Horton (University Park, Md./DeMatha) and
Gavin McKay (Urbana, Md./Urbana) each scored three goals.
How It Happened
- The Seahawks scored three times, including two in 43 seconds, for a 3-0 lead with 5:11 remaining in the first period. Maxwell Forrey put Eastern on the scoreboard with 4:21 left in the quarter.
- The two sides alternated the first two goals of the second frame before SMCM closed out the first half on a 3-0 run for a 7-2 halftime advantage. Sophomore midfielder Gavin Phipps (Mayo, Md./South River) netted the final goal of the half with 15 ticks on the clock.
- The Eagles closed the gap to 7-5 with three unanswered goals to begin the third stanza. St. Mary's College sandwiched another Eastern goal with tallies from Horton and Phipps to carry a 9-6 lead into the final period.
- The Seahawks began the fourth frame with a 3-1 run to establish a 13-7 advantage with 8:16 remaining in the game. Eastern tacked on one more goal with 4:15 to go but were unable to generate any further offense as the Eagles were forced to turn the ball over three times in the final minutes.

- SMCM outshot the Eagles, 37-30, while gaining a 33-28 margin in ground balls behind a combined 13 ground ball pickups by seniors Matteo Ciccarello (Crofton, Md./Arundel) and Joe Szymanski (Easton, Md./Easton).
- St. Mary's College also won 14-of-25 faceoffs behind Ciccarello's efforts at the center of the circle.

- Horton finished the game with a season-best three goals and three assists plus two ground balls.
- McKay contributed three goals and one helper plus one ground ball and one caused turnover.
- Phipps and sophomore midfielder Carson Gianelli (Perry Hall, Md./Curley) both scored twice while senior midfielder Nick Machiran (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) tallied four points on a goal and three dimes.
- Sophomore goalie Ty Spencer (Hanover, Md./Indian Creek) made 11 saves and picked up two loose balls.
Eastern Game Notes
- Frankie Fanelli led the Eagles with two goals and an assist while Brendan Kim notched seven stops.
