SMCM Women’s Tennis Wraps Up Spring Break Matches

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team posted a 1-3 record at the PTR Spring Tennis Fest in Hilton Head, S.C. between March 17-19, before opening United East Conference action with a shutout victory Saturday afternoon (Mar. 21).
 
St. Mary's College (4-4, 1-0 UEC) dropped a pair of 6-1 decisions to The College of Wooster (Mar. 17) and College of Saint Mary (Neb.) (Mar. 18) before rebounding with a 4-3 triumph over Schreiner University (Mar. 19). The Seahawks ended their Hilton Head trip with a 4-3 loss to Ripon College (Mar. 19). SMCM returned to the win column with a 7-0 league win at Cedar Crest College.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
WOOSTER
  • First-years Lily Ganjbaksh (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and Addyson Harden (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills) posted a hard-fought 7-6 (8-6) triumph over Elizabeth Meiners and Sasha Riley at No. 1 doubles, but Wooster claimed wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to head into singles action with a 1-0 lead.
  • Ganjbaksh notched the team's lone point with her 6-3, 6-3 victory over Meiners at No. 1 singles.
 
SAINT MARY (NEB.)
  • Saint Mary won all three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
  • Sophomore Sarah Levit (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) tallied the team's lone point with a gritty 6-1, 1-6, 10-6 win over Noel Moreno at No. 2 singles.
 
SCHREINER
  • Harden proved to be the difference in the 4-3 win over Schreiner as she broke the 3-3 draw with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 victory over Sonnea Garcia at No. 6 singles.
  • St. Mary's College carried a 1-0 lead into singles action after Ganjbaksh and Levit won 6-4 at No. 1 doubles and sophomores Stella Manns (White Hall, Md./North Harford) and Lily Spedden (Cambridge, Md./Cambridge South Dorchester) notched a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles.
  • The Seahawks stretched their lead to 3-0 with straight set wins by Ganjbaksh and junior captain Lauren Lovejoy (Newburg, Md./La Plata) at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively.
  • Schreiner took No. 2, 5, and 4 singles to level the match at 3-3.
 
RIPON
  • SMCM started with a 1-0 lead after capturing all three doubles matches.
  • Ganjbaksh extended the lead to 2-0 by shutting out Jessi Griepentrog at No. 1 singles.
  • The Red Hawks knotted the match at 2-2 with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.
  • Sophomore Zoe Wilson (Clarksburg, Md./Holy Cross) gave St. Mary's College a 3-2 lead with a determined 7-6 (11-9), 6-3 triumph at No. 4 singles.
  • Ripon took the match, 4-3, with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
 
CEDAR CREST
  • The Seahawks dropped only two games in the entire match in opening United East action at Cedar Crest.
