SMCM Men’s Lacrosse Rallies for United East Win at Penn College

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team outscored host Penn College, 8-3, in the second half, including a five-goal fourth quarter to overcome a two-goal deficit Saturday afternoon (Mar. 28). St. Mary's College (8-4, 2-0 UEC) remained undefeated in United East Conference action with a 13-10 road win over Penn College (9-3, 0-1 UEC).
 
How It Happened
  • Penn College won the first quarter, 4-2, as the Wildcats netted the first goal of the game at 12:34. Thiry-four seconds later, junior attackman Gavin McKay (Urbana, Md./Urbana) leveled the game at 1-1. PCT went up 3-1 at 6:14 before senior captain Joshua Martel (Linthicum, Md./North County) scored his first of four with 1:34 to go. Penn College added a fourth in the last 10 seconds of the quarter.
  • After the Wildcats scored the first goal of the second period, the Seahawks used a 3-1 run to pull within 6-5 with 8:03 remaining in the half. PCT reclaimed a two-goal lead with a goal in the final 88 seconds.
  • SMCM opened the third frame with a 3-1 run to knot the game at 8-8 with 7:30 left in the third. However, Penn College notched the final two goals of the quarter to head into the fourth frame with a 10-8 advantage.
  • In the fourth period, the St. Mary's College defense limited the Wildcat offense to just five shots with sophomore goalie Ty Spencer (Hanover, Md./Indian Creek) denying all four shots on goal. On the opposite end, the Seahawks fired off 14 total shots and scored five goals on eight shots on goal. McKay fueled the five-goal spurt with three assists while junior attackman Declan Horton (University Park, Md./DeMatha) added two goals and one dime.

  • SMCM outshot the hosts, 55-27, while dominating ground balls by a 44-22 margin behind a game-best 11 ground balls from senior Matteo Ciccarello (Crofton, Md./Arundel).
  • St. Mary's College posted a 19-of-27 advantage in face-offs as Ciccarello won 18-of-26.

  • McKay tallied a career-best seven points on three goals and career-high four assists while picking up a career-best three loose balls.
  • Martel finished with a season-best four goals while adding two ground balls.
  • Senior defenseman Joe Szymanski (Easton, Md./Easton) paced the Seahawk defense with five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Spencer finished the game with eight saves.

  • Elliot Dotson led the Wildcats with two goals and two assists while Ryan Twist made 21 saves.
