ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team used a late offensive push to break a tie and secure a 7-4 victory over Wilson on Tuesday afternoon at the Hawk's Nest.
The Seahawks improved to 8-15 overall (4-5 UEC) behind timely hitting and a steady effort on the mound, pulling away with three runs over the final two innings after Wilson had battled back to even the score.
St. Mary's struck first in the opening frame, manufacturing a pair of runs without recording an extra-base hit. An RBI groundout by Connor Wilkerson plated Eli Shafer before Kyle Catanzaro followed with an RBI single to give the Seahawks a 2-0 lead.
After a quiet stretch through the middle innings, the Seahawks added to their lead in the fifth. Will Wilson delivered an RBI double and later scored on a sacrifice groundout by Aaron Wathen to extend the advantage to 4-0.
Wilson responded in the sixth and seventh innings, taking advantage of walks and timely hits to tie the game at 4-4. The Phoenix drew 13 walks in the contest and capitalized with a two-run seventh highlighted by Garrett Drish's RBI single up the middle.
St. Mary's quickly answered in the bottom half of the seventh. With the bases loaded, DJ Sifford was hit by a pitch to bring home the go-ahead run, putting the Seahawks back in front, 5-4.
The Seahawks added key insurance in the eighth inning as Rhett Fletcher delivered a clutch two-run double down the left field line, scoring Connor Wilkerson and Corey Brown to make it 7-4.
On the mound, Colin Patterson earned the win in relief, improving to 3-1 on the season after working a scoreless seventh inning. Ryan Matthews closed the door with a scoreless ninth to pick up his first save of the year.
Starter Colin Bashor struck out 10 over 5.1 innings, allowing just one run while working around eight walks in a gritty outing.
Offensively, St. Mary's was led by Eli Shafer, who went 2-for-5 with a run scored, while Aaron Wathen added a pair of hits and an RBI. Fletcher drove in two runs with his late double, and Catanzaro chipped in with an RBI single.
The Seahawks return to action later this week as they continue United East Conference play with an away series with Penn State Abington this Saturday, April 18th
