ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team used an eight-goal first quarter to return to the win column Tuesday night (April 21). St. Mary's College (9-7) snapped a three-game skid with a 12-8 non-conference victory over University of Mary Washington (7-8) as sophomores
Owen Wynot (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) and
Gavin Phipps (Mayo, Md./South River) combined for seven goals.
How It Happened
- Wynot sparked a 5-1 start by scoring the Seahawks' first two goals of the game within a five-minute span. Mary Washington scored twice in 73 seconds to pull within 5-3 with 4:13 remaining in the first quarter.
- SMCM put together a 5-0 run to stake a 10-3 advantage with 12:06 left to play in the first half. After Tanner Boone tallied the Eagles' fourth goal at 10:09, neither side found the back of the net for the remainder of the half and St. Mary's College headed into halftime with a 10-4 lead.
- The Seahawks' six-goal cushion remained after third-quarter play as each squad scored once.
- UMW won the fourth frame, 3-1, including Christian Fleming scoring from midfield as time expired.

- SMCM edged Mary Washington, 41-40, in shots while winning the ground ball battle, 31-22.
- Senior Matteo Ciccarello (Crofton, Md./Arundel) won 12-of-20 faceoffs to help St. Mary's College post a .619 (13-of-21) winning percentage for the game.

- Wynot finished with four goals for the second straight game and added three ground balls.
- Phipps contributed a career-high three goals for his first career hat trick.
- Sophomore midfielder Carson Giannelli (Perry Hall, Md./Curley) chipped in a goal and two assists plus one ground ball.
- Ciccarello scooped up nine ground balls while senior defenseman Joe Szymanski (Easton, Md./Easton) paced the defense with four loose ball pickups and three caused turnovers.
- Sophomore goalie Ty Spencer (Hanover, Md./Indian Creek) made nine saves and scooped up one ground ball.
