St. Mary’s College Field Hockey Battle York (Pa.)

YORK, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team took on York College of Pennsylvania Saturday afternoon (Sept. 12). St. Mary's College (1-2) dropped its second game in a row, falling 2-0 at York (Pa.) (2-2) in non-conference action as the Spartans scored once in the first quarter and once in the fourth.
 
How It Happened
  • YCP jumped out in front within the first minute of the game as Kate Egan found the back of the goal just 36 seconds in, finishing off a pass from Hannah Downs.
  • The Seahawks regrouped following the early goal and held York scoreless for the remainder of the first half, going into halftime down only one.
  • SMCM continued to apply its defensive pressure throughout the second half, including withstanding an 11-shot barrage in the third quarter which saw senior Caroline McDonald (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) making eight saves.
  • The Spartans broke through once again at 54:15 when Claire Burrows knocked in a pass from Olivia Miller.

  • YCP notched a 26-3 shot advantage for the game, including a 19-1 margin in shots on goal.
  • York also posted a 19-0 edge in penalty corners.
 
St. Mary's College
  • McDonald collected a career-best 16 saves while senior defender Safi Stimely (Linthicum, Md./Broadneck) tallied her second defensive save in as many games in the first period.
  • Sophomore Josie Mascolo (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) paced St. Mary's College with two shots while senior midfielder Tori Hampton (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) put the Seahawks' lone shot on target.
 
York
  • Burrows took a game-best five shots, all of which were on target, and scored her first goal of the season.
  • Abby Smith needed just one save for her first shutout of the season.
  • The Spartans now lead the series, 29-11, including six straight wins.
