Seahawks Field Hockey Stifled by No. 21 Washington & Lee

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team dropped their home-opener Sunday afternoon (Sept. 13). St. Mary's College (1-3) lost its third consecutive game with a 4-0 non-conference decision to No. 21 Washington & Lee University (3-1) as the visiting Generals scored once in each quarter.
 
How It Happened
  • Washington & Lee claimed a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the game when Charlotte Dreany found the lower right corner off a pass from Lauren Zoota.
  • With less than five minutes left in the first half, the Generals doubled their lead when Margaret Cover put back the rebound from a blocked cross.
  • Britty Page gave WLU a 3-0 advantage at 34:35 as Page corralled a loose ball and found the back of the goal for her first of the season.
  • The final Washington & Lee goal came at 54:53 when Margaret Scheurer redirected a pass towards the near post and Cecilia Hartford deflected the ball into the cage.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • The Generals posted a 22-3 shot advantage as the defense held the Seahawks without a shot in the first and fourth periods. WLU also notched an 11-1 margin in shots on goal.
  • Washington & Lee also gained a 14-1 edge in penalty corners.
 
St. Mary's College
  • Sophomore Josie Mascolo (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) paced SMCM with two shots, including the team's lone shot on target in the third quarter.
  • Senior captain Caroline McDonald (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) earned her second straight start this season, collecting seven saves and allowing three goals in 45 minutes of action. Junior Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) started the fourth period, yielding one goal.
 
Washington & Lee
  • Scheurer led the Generals with a game-best five shots and added an assist.
  • Zoota finished the game with three shots (all on target) and an assist.
  • Helenka Chodakiewicz and Dory Fosgate combined for WLU's second shutout of the season.
  • Washington & Lee now owns a 9-3 series record with the Seahawks, including winning the last two meetings.
