Presgraves Leads SMCM Field Hockey Past Randolph-Macon

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Sophomore midfielder Julie Presgraves (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) tallied her second game-winning goal of the season to lead the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team to their second win of the season Thursday evening (Sept. 17). St. Mary's College (2-3) snapped a three-game skid with a highly contested 2-1 non-conference victory over Randolph-Macon College (3-3).

How It Happened
  • The Seahawks controlled the tempo of the first quarter with a 5-2 margin in both shots and penalty corners. However, Randolph-Macon did well to either block the shots or force them wide.
  • Junior Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) and the SMCM defense were tested in the second period as the Yellow Jackets posted an 8-1 shot advantage, forcing Kent to make three saves. Thanks to St. Mary's College's solid defensive play, the two teams headed into halftime in a scoreless draw.
  • The Yellow Jackets broke through first as Caitlin Porter put away a loose ball for a 1-0 R-MC lead at 34:42. The visitor lead didn't last long as the Seahawks connected on a penalty corner five minutes later. Sophomore forward Morgan Knott (Denton, Md./North Caroline) inserted the ball up to senior midfielder Tori Hampton (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora), who rocketed a shot towards the cage for her first goal of the season.
  • Although SMCM was outshot, 13-1, in the final stanza, St. Mary's College made the most of its lone fourth-quarter shot. Senior forward Emma Mastrangelo (Riverton, N.J./Cinnaminson) dribbled along the endline before passing the ball towards the penalty stroke spot where Presgraves redirected it towards the back of the cage at 53:26.
  • Randolph-Macon looked to respond in the final minutes of the game, earning three penalty corners and generating three shots.
