Mascolo Powers St. Mary’s College Field Hockey Past Washington College

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team put together a two-game win streak Wednesday night (Sept. 23) with a non-conference road win. St. Mary's College (3-3) posted a 1-0 victory over host Washington College (2-5) behind sophomore forward Josie Mascolo's (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) second career goal.

How It Happened
  • Washington College posted a 3-0 shot advantage as well as a 3-1 margin in penalty corners in the first quarter. Junior Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) was up to the challenge, turning away two shots while the other shot went wide.
  • In the second frame, the Shorewomen edged the visitors 5-4 in shots and 4-3 in corners, but it was St. Mary's College who came out on top. Once again, Kent was a brick wall, denying all five shots.
  • Mascolo received the 'Fein-light' and blasted a shot just inside the near post with 7.2 seconds to go before halftime on the Seahawks' third penalty corner of the period.
  • Washington College outshot SMCM, 10-1, and earned 11 corners to the Seahawks' four over the final 30 minutes. Kent added four more stops while the defensive line blocked four additional shots.
