ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland sailing teams set sail on the 2026-27 campaign this past weekend (Sept. 12-13), competing at Old Dominion University's Riley Cup as well as the ILCA South and Navy Women's which were both hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy.
 
RILEY CUP
St. Mary's College had two boats competing at the Riley Cup with Seahawks 2 finishing second (40 points) and Seahawks 1 taking sixth (58 points) in the 18-boat field.
 
First-year skipper Colin Krebs (San Diego, Calif.) and senior crew Mary Govan (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) commanded a second-place finish in Division B with a low score of 14 to help Seahawks 2 to a second-place finish. The duo finished top five in all five races, including winning Race 4B. First-year skipper Davide Bazzoni (Miami, Fla./MAST Academy) and sophomore crew Haley Temme (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) contributed a fifth-place finish in Division A.
 
For Seahawks 1, sophomore skipper Mason Cook (Annapolis, Md./Key) and junior captain Jane Wright (Wilmington, N.C./Hoggard) took sixth in Division A as they won Races 3A and 5A. Junior skipper Scott Opert (Galesville, Md./Southern) and junior crew Emery Strockbine (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) placed fifth in Division B after earning the tiebreaker over Old Dominion.
 
NAVY WOMEN'S
The Seahawks finished sixth in the eight-boat field with 212 points.
 
Senior skipper Lina Carper (Carlsbad, Calif./Coronado) and junior crew Elise Jones (Cambridge, Md./Cambridge South Dorchester) posted a fifth-place finish in Division A, winning Race 6A, while sophomore skipper Molly Dowling (Lothian, Md./Southern) along with senior Jaden Talay (Mission Viejo, Calif./) and first-year Emma Parks (New Orleans, La./Willow), came together for a sixth-place finish in Division B.
 
ILCA SOUTH
Senior Mats Braaten (Toronto, Ont./Humberside) finished strong at the ILCA South, jumping five spots from Saturday's 11th-place finish to sixth with 94 points as Braaten earned the tiebreaker over teammate, first-year Owen Fretwell (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic). Braaten won Races 4 and 5 while coming in second in Race 12 and third in Race 10.
 
Fretwell remained consistent all weekend long, finishing seventh with 94 points as well, capturing Race 10 and taking second in Race 11.

Braaten and Fretwell now advance to the Carl VanDuyne Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) Men's Singlehanded Championship hosted by Navy on Oct. 3-4.
