ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland open sailing team stayed close to home, competing at their own SMC Open this past weekend (Sept. 26-27). St. Mary's College claimed eighth and 11th place at the SMC Open. Additionally, some team members participated at the Navy Fall Scrimmage in Annapolis.
 
The forecast of high winds led to the postponement of the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) Match Race Championship and the battle for the Intrepid Trophy was rescheduled to Monday, Oct. 12.
 
Seahawks 1 placed eighth with 237 points in the 16-team field at the SMCM Open while Seahawks 2 came in 11th with a score of 264.
 
First-year skipper Davide Bazzoni (Miami, Fla./MAST Academy) and junior crew Emery Strockbine (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) of Seahawks 1 tallied 76 points to take second in Division A. The duo collected four top two finishes, including winning Race 5A.
 
Senior skipper Lina Carper (Carlsbad, Calif./Coronado) and junior crew Elise Jones (Cambridge, Md./Cambridge South Dorchester) took third in Division A for Seahawks 2, notching 79 points behind five top three placements. The tandem captured Race 9A.
 
In Division B, sophomore skipper Lilly Rippel (Norfolk, Va./Maury) and first-year crew Emma Parks (New Orleans, La./Willow) finished 13th for Seahawks 1 with 161 points. The team's best finish was fifth in Race 10B.
 
Sophomore skipper Molly Dowling (Lothian, Md./Southern), along with senior crew Jaden Talay (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley) and Grace-Anne Phillips (Stevensville, Md./Gunston) and first-year crew Makayla Hansen (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown), came in 15th for Seahawks 2 with a score of 185. Dowling and Hansen put forth the best finish in Race 13B as the duo took 10th.
