CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team battled back from an early deficit Thursday night, defeating Washington College, 3-2, at the Cain Athletic Center. The Seahawks dropped the opening set, 25-16, but responded by winning the next two sets, 26-24 and 25-22. Washington College forced a fifth set with a 25-20 fourth-set victory before St. Mary's closed out the match, 15-13.
Erianna Mendieta led the Seahawks offensively with 13 kills on 22 attacks while hitting .500. Maya Mauro added nine kills, while Hope Parrish contributed seven kills. Sanaa Porter and Vlada Costenco each chipped in four kills while hitting .429, while Maggie Mohler added two kills on four attacks to hit .500.
Camilla Galeano paced the St. Mary's offense with 20 assists, while Lauren Panageotou added 18 assists and three aces. Stella Marrero led the Seahawks defensively with 10 digs, while Camilla Galeano and Lauren Panageotou each recorded three digs.
St. Mary's finished the match with 50 kills, 49 assists, 12 service aces and 38 digs. The Seahawks saved their strongest attacking performance for the decisive fifth set, recording 11 kills on 19 attacks with just four errors to hit .368.
The Seahawks return home this weekend as they host Hood College and Randolph College in the Seahawks Tri-Match. St. Mary's will take on Hood College Saturday, Sept. 19, at 11:00 a.m. and Randolph College at 3:00 p.m.
