LANGHORNE, Pa. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team (8-5, 1-0 United East) opened United East Conference play with a thrilling five-set victory over Cairn University (8-4, 0-1 United East) on Saturday afternoon. After dropping the first two sets, the Seahawks battled back to claim three consecutive sets to secure the 3-2 comeback victory (19-25, 25-27, 25-23, 25-20, 15-10).
How It Happened
The Highlanders came out strong, taking the opening set 25-19. The Seahawks responded with a competitive second set that featured 11 ties and six lead changes, but Cairn narrowly edged St. Mary's 27-25 to take a 2-0 advantage.Â
Facing a two-set deficit, the Seahawks began their comeback in the third set. St. Mary's battled through another closely contested frame, securing a 25-23 victory to keep the match alive.Â
The Seahawks carried their momentum into the fourth set, earning a 25-20 win to force a decisive fifth set. St. Mary's completed the comeback with a commanding 15-10 victory, holding Cairn to a negative hitting percentage in the final frame to secure its first conference win of the season.Â
