Megan Uglik (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) led all
players with a career-high 24 points as the St. Mary's College of
Maryland women's basketball team won the tournament trophy with a
76-56 victory over Maine Maritime Academy in the championship game
of the SUNY Maritime Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon.
Uglik and freshman center Tiara Hurte (Baltimore,
Md./Perry Hall) both represented the Seahawks (2-0) on the
All-Tournament Team. Uglik finished the tournament with 33
points, 11 rebounds, four assists, four steals, and three
blocks. Hurte contributed a double-double with 15.0 points
per game and a 10.0 rebounding average.
A jumper by junior forward Allie Scott (Laurel,
Md./Atholton) and two free throws by Hurte gave St. Mary's an early
4-0 lead before 9-1 run put Maine Maritime out in front 9-5 at
16:16. A pair of Hurte free throws at 14:12 helped the
Seahawks regain the lead (12-11).
Maine Maritime made another run as the Mariners used a 10-4
spurt to pull within three (26-23) on a jumper by Katie
Pushard at 4:20. Five straight points by Uglik gave St.
Mary's a 31-23 halftime lead.
Hurte and Uglik each had nine points in the first half, while
Hurte hauled in five boards. Brittany Hunt paced the
Mariners with seven points.
Hurte's jumper to start the second half gave St. Mary's a
double-digit lead for the remainder of the contests. The
Seahawks used a 29-10 run, capped by a Scott jumper, to cruise to a
55-33 margin with 11:53 left in the game. The Mariners cut
the lead to 10 (63-53) at 6:21 behind 12 points by Megan
Franklin. SMCM sealed the win with a 13-3 run to close
out the game.
Along with her 24 points, Uglik had five rebounds and two
assists. Hurte finished with her first career double-double
on 15 points and a game-high 11 boards. Scott added 18 points
with eight caroms. Sophomore guard Steph
Saint-Aubin (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) chipped in 10
points and three steals.
As a team, St. Mary's was 22-of-24 from the charity stripe for a
91.7-free throw percentage. The Hawk defense held Maine
Maritime to 2-of-14 (.143) from downtown.
The Mariners had Franklin and Hunt finish in double digits with
14 points each, while Amethyst Cousins notched seven
rebounds and seven points.
The Seahawks will idle during the Thanksgiving break, returning
to action on November 26 when St. Mary's travels to Glassboro, N.J.
to face Rowan University at 6:00 in non-conference action.
