Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team saw its season come to an end Friday night with a 73-44 loss to unbeaten Washington and Lee University in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship at the Duchossois Athletic & Recreation Center.
The Seahawks close the season with a 23-6 overall record, including a perfect 13-0 mark in United East Conference play, while the Generals remain undefeated at 29-0.
Washington and Lee seized control early, opening the game with a 27-point first quarter while holding St. Mary's to just six points. The Generals continued to build their advantage in the second period, taking a 48-15 lead into halftime.
St. Mary's battled more evenly in the second half, outscoring the hosts 18-11 in the fourth quarter, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
The Seahawks shot 27.5 percent (14-of-51) from the field and 25.0 percent (3-of-12) from beyond the arc, while Washington and Lee connected on 41.3 percent (26-of-63) of its shots and controlled the glass 46-28.
First year Skylar Woodyard paced St. Mary's with 10 points, adding three rebounds.Samantha Blaylock also scored 10 points off the bench, knocking down two three-pointers. Tramarie Mobray chipped in nine points and went 7-of-8 at the free throw line, while Saffiyah Gibson contributed seven points.
Rayna Miller led the Seahawks on the boards with six rebounds, and the St. Mary's bench accounted for 20 points in the contest.
The Seahawks forced 17 turnovers and converted them into 10 points. St. Mary's scored 20 bench points in the contest. The appearance marked the program's first return to the NCAA Tournament since 1999 following its United East Championship run.
Washington and Lee was led by Mary Schleusner, who recorded 22 points and 13 rebounds to pace the Generals' balanced attack.
