St. Mary's City, Md. - Four Seahawk starters
recorded double-digit scoring as the St. Mary's College of Maryland
women's basketball team posted a dominating 72-34 win over the
visiting Mustangs of Villa Julie College Wednesday night in the
Capital Athletic Conference opener for both squads.
Senior guard Megan Uglik (Mt. Airy,
Md./Linganore) led all players with 19 points and assists, while
junior forward Allie Scott (Laurel, Md./Atholton)
added 15. Sophomore guard Stephanie
Saint-Aubin contributed 14 as well as season-highs of
eight boards and five steals. Freshman center Tiara
Hurte (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) continued her doubling
ways as Hurte registered her third straight double-double on 13
points and a game-high 11 caroms, while chipping a season-high five
steals.
After Uglik opened the game with a jumper, VJC's senior guard
Tonia Cristino (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield)
converted a jumper and then completed the three-point play at the
line for the Mustangs' only lead of the game at 16:44. From
there, St. Mary's (4-0, 1-0 CAC) pulled away with nine straight
points behind five from Scott to lead 11-4 at 14:03 and never
looked back.
The Seahawks owned a 39-12 halftime advantage as Scott tallied
13 points and Uglik had 11. Villa Julie was held to only
three field goals in the first half, but the Mustangs did connect
on six of nine free throws.
St. Mary's biggest lead of the game was a margin of 40 - twice
in the second half. The first came at 7:19 on Hurte's layup,
making the score 62-22, and the second (66-26) was after
Saint-Aubin's lay-up with 4:20 left.
Freshman forward Kristen Steiner (Forest Hill,
Md./Fallston) paced the Mustangs (0-4, 0-1 CAC) with eight points
and eight rebounds, while freshman Denita Brown
(Laurel, Md./Montrose Christian) also grabbed eight boards and
senior Ashley Burrell (Baltimore, Md./Institute of
Notre Dame) chipped in six points.
St. Mary's continues conference play this Saturday as the
Seahawks travel to Arlington, Va. to take on Marymount (Va.)
University at 2:00. The Mustangs will host York (Pa.) College
in CAC action on Saturday as well at 2:00.
