St. Mary's City, Md. - Junior forward
Kiely Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) poured in a
career- and game-high 23 points in leading the St. Mary's College
of Maryland women's basketball team to its fourth consecutive
victory Wednesday night with a 73-58 win over Wesley College in
Capital Athletic Conference action.
Murphy finished the evening shooting 8-of-13 from the field,
including hitting a career-high seven three-point shots in 11
attempts.
The Seahawks (11-5, 5-3 CAC) rushed off to a 7-1 start before
using a 14-4 run to pull away from Wesley, 21-9, at 9:09. For
the remainder of the half, St. Mary's kept the Wolverines at bay
and the Seahawks carried a 33-25 lead into halftime.
Wesley's Angie Owens led all players at
intermission with eight points on 4-of-8 shooting and five
rebounds. Three players for St. Mary's netted six points each
in the first 20 minutes. The Seahawks shot a strong 41.7%
(5-12) from downtown, while holding the Wolverines to 2-of-10.
The CAC newcomer this season, Wesley (7-9, 4-4 CAC) made it a
game in the second half as the Wolverines outscored St. Mary's 23
to 16 in the stanza's first 9:41 minutes to pull within
49-48. However, that was as close as Wesley would get as
back-to-back three-pointers by Murphy solidified the Seahawk
lead. St. Mary's increased its margin to 19 (73-54) at 1:20
following a lay-up by junior forward Allie Scott
(Laurel, Md./Atholton).
All five Seahawk starters finished in double digits as Murphy
led the way with her 23. Scott contributed a double-double on
12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while sophomore guard
Steph Saint-Aubin (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton)
also had a double-double on a career- and game-high 12 boards and
10 points.
Senior guard Megan Uglik (Mt. Airy,
Md./Linganore) added 11 points and a season-high eight caroms,
while freshman forward Tiara Hurte (Baltimore,
Md./Perry Hall) chipped in 11 points as well and grabbed seven
rebounds.
For Wesley, freshman guard Cory Boyd (Point
Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) had 13 points, six rebounds, and
four assists. Owens and sophomore forward Colleen
Thomas (Howell, N.J./Howell) each notched 12 points with
Owens hauling in nine boards.
St. Mary's next opponent will be Villa Julie College this
Saturday at 2:00 in Stevenson, Md. for another conference tilt.
