Stevenson, Md. - The Villa
Julie College women's basketball team snapped St. Mary's College of
Maryland's four-game winning streak with a 73-70 overtime victory
Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC)
action. The win avenges the Mustangs' earlier 72-34 road loss
to St. Mary's on November 28.
VJC's junior guard Tara Galvin (Lititz,
Pa./Manheim Township) fired up a three-point shot with two seconds
remaining in regulation to push the contest into overtime. In
overtime, the Mustangs held St. Mary's to just one field goal as
Villa Julie outscored the Seahawks, 9-6 in the OT period, posting a
5-2 run to close out the game in the final 2:47.
It was slow going in the first half as both teams struggled to
connect from the field. VJC shot 29.4% (10-34) to St. Mary's
18.5% (5-27), but the Mustangs (6-12, 3-6 CAC) did make five of
their 10 three-point attempts and used that to post a 29-23
halftime advantage.
The Seahawks (11-6, 5-4 CAC) never controlled the game in the
first stanza as Villa Julie boasted a seven-point lead on two
occasions: at 14:30 (12-5) and at 1:57 (27-20). The Mustangs'
biggest lead of the entire game occurred at 2:31 when VJC led 27-19
on a layup by senior Tanisha Foster (Baltimore,
Md./St. Frances Academy).
St. Mary's pulled within one five times in the first half and
tied the game twice but could not get over the hump as sophomore
guard Steph Saint-Aubin (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth
Seton) paced all players with 13 first-half points as Saint-Aubin
went 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Galvin led her squad
with nine.
Down 33-25 with 18:47 left in the game, the Seahawks posted a
21-12 run to finally take hold of the lead at 11:23 (46-45)
following a good three-pointer by senior guard Megan
Uglik (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore). St. Mary's would go
on to stretch its lead to 61-53 with 3:57 remaining and looked to
be track to win its fifth straight. An 8-1 run put the
Mustangs within one at 00:26 but two made free throws by junior
forward Kiely Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel)
returned a three-point margin to the Seahawks with 20 seconds on
the clock.
VJC had a pair of starters record double-doubles as Galvin
finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Foster also had 20
points and 13 boards. Senior Ashley Burrell
(Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) added a dozen to round out
the double digit scorers for the Mustangs.
Saint-Aubin ended with a game-high 22 points as she went
12-of-16 from the charity stripe and matched her career-high with
seven steals for the third time. Junior forward Allie
Scott (Laurel, Md./Atholton) registered her second
straight double-double on 15 points and a game- and season-high 15
caroms, while Uglik added 15 as well and Murphy chipped in 10.
St. Mary's will look to get back on the winning track when the
Seahawks travel to Elizabethtown, Pa. to take on Elizabethtown
College on Monday, January 28 at 7:30 in non-conference play.
