St. Mary's City, Md. - The York (Pa.) College
women's basketball team extended its win streak to four straight
with a 69-63 victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland Wednesday
night in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) action.
There were four lead changes in the first half with the last one
occurring at 10:14 when York's junior guard Donna
Figenshu (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) made good on a
layup to give her Spartans the lead for good at 19-18. York
rolled to a 26-18 advantage with 5:18 left in the half following a
7-0 run; however, four points by senior forward Lisa
Daciek (Laurel, Md./Atholton) helped the Seahawks (7-4,
3-2 CAC) to pull within four (28-24) at 2:11. A 5-0 spurt
gave the Spartans a 33-24 advantage at intermission.
St. Mary's was hurt by poor shooting in the first half as the
Seahawks connected on 10 of 35 (28.6%) attempts, while YCP made
38.9% (14-36) of its shots.
York (10-3, 2-2 CAC) was paced by senior Kristen
Daly (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) who tallied 10 points,
while freshman forward April Sparkman
(Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) hauled in seven caroms.
Sophomore guard Steph Saint-Aubin (Bowie,
Md./Elizabeth Seton) led her squad with nine at the half, while
freshman forward Tiara Hurte (Baltimore, Md./Perry
Hall) grabbed seven boards.
In the second half, the Spartans increased their nine-point
halftime margin to 19 three times, including at 10:36
(59-40). St. Mary's clawed its way back with a 20-6 run to
trail 65-60 with 53 seconds on the clock. York went 3-for-5
at the free throw line to jump out 68-60 with 19 seconds
left. Senior guard Megan Uglik (Mt. Airy,
Md./Linganore) connected on her third three-pointer of the night to
put the Hawks within five at 00:14.
After junior guard Keli Ward (Nottingham,
Pa./Oxford) made the second of two free throws at 00:11, St. Mary's
next two field goal attempts were unsuccessful and the game ended
at 69-63.
Daly finished the evening with a game-high 19 and six rebounds,
while Sparkman added a double-double on 18 points and a game-best
dozen boards. Junior guard Amanda Andrews
(Fallston, Md./Fallston) was also in double figures with 13
points.
Two Seahawks registered double-doubles as Saint-Aubin notched a
game-high 19 and matched her career-high with 10 caroms and Hurte
contributed 13 points and 10 boards. Uglik had 17 points on
3-of-5 shooting from downtown and dished out a game-high six
assists.
St. Mary's will hit the hardwood again this Saturday as the
Seahawks take on No. 5/7 University of Mary Washington in
Fredericksburg, Va. in CAC action at 2:00.
