St. Mary's Posts Dominating Season-Opening Win

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. - All five Seahawk starters notched double-figure points to help the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team post a 75-48 victory over Ramapo College in the opening round of the 2008 Cherry Cove/Seahawk Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon.

St. Mary's will face Susquehanna University (1-0) in the championship game tomorrow at 4:00 as the Crusaders notched a 65-49 win over the Devils of FDU-Florham (0-1) in today's other tournament contest.  Ramapo will square off against the Devils in the consolation match at 2:00.

Senior forward Allie Scott (Laurel, Md./Atholton) paced the Seahawks (1-0) with 15 points and nine rebounds, while junior center Alex Wenger (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) pulled down a career-high 10 boards and chipped in four points.

The Roadrunners (0-1) led for the first two minutes of the game, 5-3, as sophomore guard Stephanie Cannizzaro (Pequannock, N.J./Pequannock) scored an opening lay-up off the tip-off and a three-pointer.  However, a jumper by Scott at 18:01 sparked a 13-5 run to give St. Mary's control of the game and a 16-10 lead at 12:28.  Junior forward Lindsey Gripenburg (Butler, N.J./St. John's University) pulled Ramapo to within 19-16 at 8:03 but a 14-3 push by the Hawks sealed their 33-19 halftime lead.

Senior forward Kiely Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) led all players at intermission with 11 points, while Wenger had seven of her game's 10 boards in the first 20 minutes.  For Ramapo, Gripenburg picked up six points and junior center Beth Weinmann (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) grabbed eight first-half rebounds.

The Seahawks dominated the second half as they bolstered their lead to 28 points on three separate occasions, the last one coming with 7:39 (65-37) left in the game.

Joining Scott in double figures were Murphy and sophomore guards Megan Seeman (Frederick, Md./Linganore) and Jamie Roberts (Rockville, Md./The Barrie School) as the trio finished with 13.  The 13 points were a career-best for Seeman.  Sophomore center Tiara Hurte (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) contributed a dozen and six caroms.  Murphy and freshman guard Bethany Townsend (Accokeek, Md./Gwynn Park) each dished out five assists.

St. Mary's finished the game shooting 49.2% from the field but struggled at the free throw line, only making 11-of-27.

Cannizzaro led all players with 18 points and seven steals as the Roadrunners shot 32.8% from the field, while Weinmann grabbed a game-high 13 boards.  Ramapo also had issues at the charity stripe, going just 7-of-23.
