St. Mary's City, Md. - All five Seahawk
starters notched double-figure points to help the St. Mary's
College of Maryland women's basketball team post a 75-48 victory
over Ramapo College in the opening round of the 2008 Cherry
Cove/Seahawk Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon.
St. Mary's will face Susquehanna University (1-0) in the
championship game tomorrow at 4:00 as the Crusaders notched a 65-49
win over the Devils of FDU-Florham (0-1) in today's other
tournament contest. Ramapo will square off against the Devils
in the consolation match at 2:00.
Senior forward Allie Scott (Laurel, Md./Atholton)
paced the Seahawks (1-0) with 15 points and nine rebounds, while
junior center Alex Wenger (Baltimore, Md./Perry
Hall) pulled down a career-high 10 boards and chipped in four
points.
The Roadrunners (0-1) led for the first two minutes of the game,
5-3, as sophomore guard Stephanie Cannizzaro
(Pequannock, N.J./Pequannock) scored an opening lay-up off the
tip-off and a three-pointer. However, a jumper by
Scott at 18:01 sparked a 13-5 run to give St.
Mary's control of the game and a 16-10 lead at 12:28. Junior
forward Lindsey Gripenburg (Butler, N.J./St.
John's University) pulled Ramapo to within 19-16 at 8:03 but a 14-3
push by the Hawks sealed their 33-19 halftime lead.
Senior forward Kiely Murphy (Olney, Md./Good
Counsel) led all players at intermission with 11 points, while
Wenger had seven of her game's 10 boards in the
first 20 minutes. For Ramapo, Gripenburg
picked up six points and junior center Beth
Weinmann (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) grabbed eight
first-half rebounds.
The Seahawks dominated the second half as they bolstered their
lead to 28 points on three separate occasions, the last one coming
with 7:39 (65-37) left in the game.
Joining Scott in double figures were
Murphy and sophomore guards Megan
Seeman (Frederick, Md./Linganore) and Jamie
Roberts (Rockville, Md./The Barrie School) as the trio
finished with 13. The 13 points were a career-best for
Seeman. Sophomore center Tiara
Hurte (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) contributed a dozen and
six caroms. Murphy and freshman guard
Bethany Townsend (Accokeek, Md./Gwynn Park) each
dished out five assists.
St. Mary's finished the game shooting 49.2% from the field but
struggled at the free throw line, only making 11-of-27.
Cannizzaro led all players with 18 points and
seven steals as the Roadrunners shot 32.8% from the field, while
Weinmann grabbed a game-high 13 boards.
Ramapo also had issues at the charity stripe, going just 7-of-23.
