St. Mary's City, Md. - The hot winning streak
of the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's basketball team
continued with the Seahawks' fourth straight which was of the upset
variety. St. Mary's garnered a 57-53 victory over No. 4
University of Mary Washington, handing the Eagles their first
Capital Athletic Conference loss of the season and just their
second overall setback of the season.
Junior forward Allie Scott (Laurel,
Md./Atholton) netted a game-high 16 points en route to her 1,000th
career point. With her eighth point of the game, Scott
surpassed the 1,000-point mark and became the second Seahawk to do
so this season. Senior guard Megan Uglik
(Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) accomplished the feat on January 21 in a
71-47 win over Johns Hopkins University.
The win gives St. Mary's (16-7, 9-5 CAC) a tight grip on third
in the conference standings, while Mary Washington is now tied for
first with No. 22 Marymount (Va.) University. The Seahawks
have now knocked off two of the top three teams in the league at
the time of tip-off as SMCM defeated York (Pa.) College on the
road, 74-66, this past Saturday when the Spartans were third in the
CAC.
St. Mary's controlled the contest from the opening tip-off as
the Eagles (20-2, 12-1 CAC) had trouble mustering any offense in
the first 20 minutes, shooting 23.7% from the floor in the first
half which included going 0-for-8 from the downtown. Mary
Washington owned a two-point lead on three separate occasions
within the game's first three and a half minutes and that was its
biggest advantage of the game.
Posting a 41.9-field goal percentage in the first half, the
Seahawks raced off to a 32-22 halftime margin as junior forward
Kiely Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) notched
seven for SMCM and three others had six points. For UMW,
junior forward Ashton Mitchell (Prince George,
Va./Prince George) led all players with nine points.
The Eagles overcame their 10-point halftime deficit by going
13-of-31 from the floor and holding St. Mary's to only seven field
goals. With 1:49 remaining, Mary Washington was only down
54-53 after a pair of free throws by senior center Liz
Hickey (Virginia Beach, Va./Bishop Sullivan
Catholic). The Seahawks went 3-of-4 at the line to stake a
57-53 lead at 00:28. The Eagles then went 0-for-3 from the
floor in the last 17 seconds to help secure the SMCM win.
Sophomore guard Steph Saint-Aubin (Bowie,
Md./Elizabeth Seton) was also in double figures for the Seahawks as
she added 13 points, six boards and four steals, while freshman
center Tiara Hurte (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall)
chipped in a dozen.
The Seahawks avenge their 77-43 road loss to then No. 5 Mary
Washington on January 12 with tonight's victory. The Eagles
went on to finish shooting 28.4% from the floor for the game.
Junior guard Katy Larson (McGaheyville,
Va./Spotswood) led Mary Washington with a game-high 16 points off
the bench, while Mitchell finished with a double-double on 15
points and a game-high 10 boards and Hickey had 13 and four
blocks. Senior forward Lisa Tracey
(Fredericksburg, Va./James Monroe) also hauled in a game-high 10
rebounds.
The Seahawks look to make it five in a row this Saturday when
St. Mary's entertains Gallaudet University at 2:00 on Senior Day.
