York, Pa. - The St. Mary's
College of Maryland women's basketball team overcame a 39-31
halftime deficit and had four players in double figures as the
Seahawks split the regular-season series with York (Pa.) College
with a 74-66 triumph Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic
Conference action in Wolf Gym.
The win places St. Mary's (15-7, 8-5 CAC) at third in the
conference standings and bumps York down to fourth, helping the
Seahawks move closer to having a CAC first round playoff game at
home on Tuesday, February 26.
In the contest's first nine minutes, the Spartans (15-7, 7-6
CAC) boasted a 27-12 advantage behind 14 points from senior forward
Kristen Daly (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity).
Seven points from junior forward Allie Scott
(Laurel, Md./Atholton) helped the Seahawks establish a 19-8 run to
pull within 35-31 with 52 seconds left in the half.
Daly and junior forward Chanel Perez
(Biglerville, Pa./Gettysburg) combined for the half's last four
points to give York a 39-31 lead at intermission. Daly
finished the first 20 minutes with 20 points and eight rebounds as
she shot 8-of-11 from floor and went 3-for-3 at the free throw
line. Scott led the Seahawks with nine.
St. Mary's opened up the second half with a 19-7 run to regain
the lead for good as senior guard Megan Uglik (Mt.
Airy, Md./Linganore) fired off three straight three-pointers to
give the Seahawks a 50-46 margin with 11:35 left in the game.
The Spartans mounted a small rally and got within two (57-55) at
7:01 but that would be as close as York would be get with St.
Mary's flying out to an 11-point lead with 3:26 remaining on a 13-4
run.
Scott finished the afternoon with a team-high 20 points and six
rebounds, while freshman center Tiara Hurte
(Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) recorded a double-double on 16 points
and a game-high 11 caroms. Uglik also had 16 points as she
connected on a career-high four three-pointers, while sophomore
guard Steph Saint-Aubin (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth
Seton) chipped in 10 points and seven boards.
The Seahawks avenge their 69-63 loss to York on January 9 with
today's victory. The Spartans were hampered by poor shooting
in the second half as York went 9-of-32 from the floor, including
1-of-6 from downtown. St. Mary's was sent to the free throw
line 35 times, including 25 occasions in the second stanza, but
only connected on 19 attempts.
Daly led all players with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while
junior guard Keli Ward (Nottingham, Pa./Oxford)
tallied 21 points and dished out a game-high six assists.
The Seahawks return to action next Wednesday, February 13 when
St. Mary's entertains the conference's top squad, No. 4 University
of Mary Washington, at 6:00.
