York, Pa. - It wasn't pretty
but the York (Pa.) College women's basketball team collected a
64-42 victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland Wednesday night
in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Spartans entered
tonight's action ranked No. 21 in D3hoops.com Top 25 and No. 22 in
the USA Today ESPN/WBCA Top 25 polls released this week.
York (13-1, 6-0 CAC) extended its school-record win streak to 13
straight with tonight's win as the Spartans remain one of only two
teams in the conference undefeated in league action. Tonight,
Marymount (Va.) University handed Hood College a 74-38 setback to
improve to 11-2, 4-0 CAC.
Both teams had subpar shooting in the first half with York
edging the Seahawks (3-9, 2-3 CAC), 30.8% to 26.7%. The
Spartans' biggest lead of the first 20 minutes came at the
10:12-mark following a 14-4 run sparked by sophomore forward
Jaimie Sapp's (Bluemont, Va./Loudoun Valley)
lay-up and capped by a lay-up by senior guard Amanda
Andrews (Fallston, Md./Fallston). Three-point
baskets by guards April Sparkman (Walkersville,

Square, Pa./Unionville) keyed a 27-19 halftime Spartan lead.

(Rockville, Md./Barrie) led all players at intermission with eight
points, while junior center Alex Wenger
(Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) hauled in seven rebounds.
Andrews and Sapp paced YCP with
six points each.
York woke up in the second stanza, shooting 55.2% and breaking
the game wide open with a 20-9 start to the half. The Spartan
defensive effort was outstanding as well as YCP caused 20 turnovers
and capitalized by netting 21 points off those turnovers.
Senior forward Chanel Perez (Biglerville,
Pa./Gettysburg) and Sapp led a blocking frenzy as
the duo combined for five blocks and York finished the game with
10.
Senior guard Keli Ward (Nottingham, Pa./Oxford)
ended the game as York's leading scorer with 13 points after
picking up 11 second-half points, while dishing out a game-high
nine assists. Sparkman and
Perez contributed nine points, while
Perez and Sapp each grabbed a
game-best nine caroms.
The Seahawks' leading scorer, senior forward Allie
Scott (Laurel, Md./Atholton), was held to two first-half
points as Scott shot a disappointing 1-of-10 from
the field, but did pull down a game-high nine boards.
Sophomore center Tiara Hurte (Baltimore, Md./Perry
Hall) performed well for SMCM, tallying a game-high 18 points and
six boards. Roberts also finished in double
figures with 13.
